I was never a fan of RnB in the 1990s, but the genre was so popular in Birmingham, that it was difficult to ignore. So, it came as no surprise to see an extremely long queue when I arrived at the Dru Hill concert at the O2 Academy, Birmingham, even in 2017!
The night featured a triple bill of notable names in RnB, including Ginuwine and 112. Unfortunately, due to the heavy traffic in the tunnels of Birmingham City Centre, caused by redevelopment of the city, I missed my window to take photographs of Ginuwine, who was first on stage. Still, I got there in time to witness a near, sell-out crowd singing along to his most famous hit song, Pony.
In what I believe to be a rare occasion for me, I was the only photographer in the photo pit for the night. This came as a welcome relief, as I’d had an intense few days of working in busy photo pits.
Having the most relaxed, and casual night I’ll probably ever have as a concert photographer, here are my photos of 112 and Dru Hill in Birmingham.
